Biodata Giovanni Garofalo

Giovanni Garofalo is a tenured researcher in Spanish at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature of Bergamo from November 2008. After obtaining a degree in Translation (French, English and Spanish) and another in Modern Languages and Literatures (Spanish and Modern Greek) from the University of Trieste, he worked as a technical translator and was involved in free-lance translating for the EU institutions. From 1994 until 2004, he held a permanent position of Translator-Interpreter for the Italian Ministry of the Interior where he became acquainted with the Italian immigration legislation and criminal legal system.

From 2002 until 2008 he taught legal Translation from Spanish into Italian at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Trieste, where he was also actively involved in the TERMit project, concerning the constitution of a multilingual Terminology Database run at the Faculty of Translation-Interpretation in Trieste. He is a member of CERLIS, the Research Centre on Languages for Specific Purposes of the University of Bergamo promoting research in the area of languages for specific purposes both on a synchronic and a diachronic level. He also contributes to the activities of the legal terminology panel of “the web of excellence” in institutional Italian (REI, Rete di Eccellenza dell’Italiano Istituzionale), instituted under the aegis of the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission.

His main research fields encompass text linguistics, legal discourse analysis with particular emphasis on judicial genres used in criminal proceedings in Spain and Italy; sociocognitive study of legal terminology, political discourse with special reference to the pragmatic organization of parliamentary debate in Spain and Italy.
